There is no honour in wilful illiteracy. To borrow a quote from a favourite film: ‘…while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth.’
The dumbing down of society is an effort – a successful one – to limit breadth of thought and imagination. I was thinking about how difficult it is in a foreign-speaking country to get one’s true personality and ideology across in conversation with limited vocabulary; in turn, inability to express oneself can lead to a lack of confidence. People owe it to themselves to keep talking, writing, and reading! 🙂
And on that note, it seems a shame not to include one of my favourite Pink Floyd songs.
